Now exporting world-class equipment to more than 20 countries worldwide, with a variety of dealers in different countries. Tong Engineering’s beginnings were of a more modest scale when they began trading as an ironmonger in Spilsby, Lincolnshire.

Originally run by Edmund Jackson Tong in the 1930s, the business has seen significant growth and change over many years. Edmund’s son Ken, and his son Charles influenced expansion and diversification into sophisticated handling machinery, which ultimately led the company to be a highly renowned UK engineering firm that it is today.

Whilst the ironmongers shop was originally run by Edmund Jackson Tong, the business has seen significant growth and change over the past 85 years.

During the 1930s, Edmund’s son Ken saw an opportunity to diversify into making simple equipment for local farmers. He started his new business in a former candle making factory in Spilsby with equipment such as sack barrows and pig pens. The business flourished and became independent from the shop, which still trades as E J Tong and Sons and is run by another branch of the family.

As a family-run business, now in its fourth generation with managing director Charles Tong and his son Edward at the forefront of the company, Tong Engineering is one of the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of handling equipment to the vegetable, recycling and waste handling industries.

From concept through design and manufacture to installation and after sales support, Tong Engineering specialise in producing a wide range of technically advanced, custom built machinery for conveying, sorting, separating, recovering and bulk handling a wide range of waste materials from plastics, paper and glass to rubber, wood, aggregates, organic waste and more.

Since the rise of advanced waste handling within the recycling industry and increased demand from the reprocessing sector, as well as new technologies for the conversion of waste materials to energy, Tong Engineering have gained a vast amount of experience in designing effective and reliable waste handling equipment.

With a vastly growing number of Tong Engineering recycling and waste handling installations throughout the UK, Tong Engineering offers unlimited expertise in plant design and bulk handling solutions including bespoke MRF systems, sophisticated trommel lines, anaerobic digestion and biogas infeed and VCU In Vessel Composting Systems, to name a few. Designed and built with the latest technology, increased efficiency and minimal maintenance in mind, all Tong Engineering equipment offers handling solutions of the highest standard, manufactured to client specification within the UK.

The addition of recycling equipment to its manufacturing bow has meant that Tong Engineering continues to grow and expand today, and now operates across two production facilities in Spilsby and Wainfleet in Lincolnshire, allowing the company to continuously adapt to increased production.
